Day six

Today we woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to go rafting on the Colorado River.   It was hard but totally worth it. The sky was a beautiful baby blue and the sun was heating up the earth here at the Grand Canyon to about 102 on the canyon floor.

We boarded the bus at 6:10, which was 10 mins late due to the wandering Elk blocking the bus from making it through the parking lot.

Once we had finally picked up all the other people we headed out for our 2.5 hour bus ride through the Grand Canyon and the Navajo Indian Reservation.  Though the bus driver was very knowledgeable and interesting, I was really hoping to have got a bit more sleep on the bus.  The highlight of his talk was him ending a lot of his sentences with the word "period". If you are a loyal reader of one of my other blogs you will know why this is so funny. The first time he said it Alyssa just giggled and smiled. Then as he kept using the word she said MOM! did you tell him to say that? Why does he keep saying that word? (Giggling the whole time.)

Once we got to our destination, we prepared for some fun.  The said it is a 3 hour tour. Lol the last time i heard that it didnt turn out well. The river rafting on a pontoon. The day was hot a bit over 100, but the river was 47 degrees.  We motored up the river and while we were minding our own business and we saw 2 California Condors. It was so awesome! The kids loved the ride and even the 47 degree water.

Well we made it off the boat just about 20 minutes before the monsoon hit or That tiny ship would have tossed. We are now on a bus watching awesome lightening and tons of rain. This place will be flooded within hours. Oh and did I mention the bus is breaking down as I am typing. Great alarm sounding. Kind of like when someone passes and the machine flatlines. Yes I know that the picture is morbid but just picture a bus in the bed and well there you go.

On another note my stubborn child won't eat what was offered. So goes hungry. After waking up from her nap she turns her nose up at pizza from the Navajo reservation but begs for some of my nachos even though they had jalapeños. End of story...yikes mom my mouth is hot! I am never eating those again. Then proceeded to order chicken tenders and fries for dinner when she never eats those and devours them.

We ended our day back at the Grand Canyon to see what was promised to be an amazing sunset. Sadly the point we went to see it was not as great as we hoped. It was nice but not as great as we were hoping. Thought Mather Point is a really awesome point to see 2/3 or more of the canyon at once.  We try not to have a heart attack due to Alyssa's daredevilness and we survive.

Another successful day.

  1. Friday, Elizabeth and I just got back from a train trip to Southern Michigan to visit relatives. We also rolled through Kingman, Flagstaff, Winslow, Albuquerque, Lamy, Raton, Trinidad, and La Junta... we actually hung out in Albuquerque both directions, having pizza or looking at the vendors along the train. Some beautiful scenery in the mountains! Our train ride was July 7-9 and 13-15 so I think we were right behind you!
