All My Children
I grew up in a divorced family. I was the only one in my friend circle to experience this. However, I was probably also the only one that got to know her mom as well as I did. Growing up the middle child of a divorced family might have been rough, but in reality I think it was great. My mom was dedicated to us. She did anything and everything for us. My older sister was too much into her friends and boy to really let it sink in and my little sister was probably too young to remember. But, even though I played sports I also had a lot of time to hang out with my mom.
Both my mom and my grandmas LOVED the ABC soaps. They would either taped them on VHS or watched them daily. So if I was home sick from school I could spend the day lying in the couch with my Grandmas watching soaps. If it was not me sick, my friends or cousins were with her. My Grandma D was Grandma too all. However, on a daily basis my mom taped All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital.
I remember vividly watching the day to day lives of the people of Pine Valley, Llanview and Port Charles. I remember the iconic characters of Erica, Tad, Dixie, Opal, Ruth, Vicky, Bo, Clint, Asa, Robert and Anna. I remember always wanting to watch each episode with my mom no matter how long it took. 3 hours of my little life, who cares...I needed to know what was going on in their lives. I also remember taping the shows in high school and college when I did not live with my mom.
Oh these three shows are like the foundation of my youth. If I was not playing soccer or softball, I was probably home watching my soaps and doing homework. I really loved these soaps. As the years went on they became more nostalgic shows for me that I could not do without. Years past and I could not even keep up with the cast and character changes, but if I could catch an episode I did. They always made me think of my mom and grandmas.
Today was the last ABC aired episode of All My Children, and I was sure to be there witnessing history. It was awesome to see the all the original characters come back. Ys sat there and shed some tears for all the characters and the families they have made over the years the spent there. I shed a tear for the memories I had with my mom and my grandmas. The memories that I have connected to these shows and family are strong. I did however, find out today that ABC has sold the license of these shows to someone else that will be showing new episodes online.
Oh goodness, have I told you about the conversation we had with grandma P about how the online works. LOL it was great. So hey Grandma, I know you are in heaven, but grab your salt and pepper shakers because the soaps are coming online. LOL
Remember if it is unladylike, fattening or fun, it must be good for you!
